I have spent the better part of the last 4 hourd trying to install this game on my father-in-law's PC.

If ONLY there was a way to download the patches as a file. This bloody thing dies about halfway into it, just kinda randomly.

I am gonna try moving a zip of my install (all 5 gigs of it) over and unzipping, to see if it will recognize the updated files when it checks.

I hate this part.

I had been thinking about getting it, but if it is that much of a problem for you.... Does not bode well for the home team.. :-)

Get a laptop ^^
Yeah I hate that update too. I'm saying why the hell download each file at at time, its fast downloading a compressed file and unpacking it would be faster. It doesn't make any sense at all.

Something to do with the fact that the only way to keep PlayOnline client safe is to complicate the whole process like a maze?

There's no other way of obtaining the latest version of that client, unless you have the latest version from the game download, right?

It is a lengthy install process, I have done it 3 times at home, once on the PS2 and then again on my desktop and laptop. Successfully.

I think there was somethign flaky with this machine, it's all set up now.

No, you have to use the Play Online client to update.

Exactly, but you have to use the game to get the client in the first place, so technically the whole thing goes through the game, right?

Sorta.

Play Online is a different exe from the FF exe. So I could update play online, but not FF.

Looks like it was a flaky network card. All better.

Just be warned, if you play the game, and are installing for hte first time, it will take a while.

The Euro version takes considerably less, what with the fact that it contains both expansions and probably patches up until the 16 of (whichever month it was that it was released in.....forgot.....september maybe).

Not yet, that QD dumbass ordered me not to get it.

Aside from that, my Radeon doesn't seem to work with this motherboard for some reason, and that puts me in having the game...........never.

I may just opt to buy the PS2 version although that's gonna be a pain in the ass...

That's slightly easier to install (still takes forever), seems more forgiving to netowrk wierdness.

It is a much more crowded screen, though, and you defintely will need a keyboard or integrated keyboard controller (like the Nyko).

Yeah, I'll try find the cheapest possible.....

I wonder how slow the game plays without a hard drive.......

There are keyboards for PS2, but I think I'll just get this...it's the price of a game, but I assume it's well worth it.

The game REQUIRES the hard drive.

ANY USB keyboard will work with the ps2 (as will almost any USB mouse).

That full size logitech controller is supposed to be decent, just a bit unwieldy.

I use my PS2 to play. The PS2 version of the game comes with the hard drive (package deal), and I spent about 90$ US on it. You also need a network adapter (if you don't already have one) about 40$ US, and an USB keyboard, about 20$ US.

Grand total:
~ $150 US

My desktop is archaic and I only run linux on it these days, so the PS2 was a more viable option for me (150$ as opposed to like 2,000$ for a new PC). If you have a good PC I would suggest trying that first. Also there are a couple of bugs involved with the PS2 and dialup connections. I couldn't update back when I was using a dialup and had to take my whole set up to my friend's work where they had high speed to update until I moved.

PS2 + dialup + installation update = you'd better have a good book
Blarghl.

I started off on the PS2, and still use it when I want to have the couch experience :)

PC is much prettier (but at least on my desktop, less stable).

I don't have the Network Thinger, but I DO have the network setup that will allow it to be plugged in (already hooked up multiple computers over a hub).

The game and the hard drive would be pricey.....add to it a Network Thinger and Keyboard, and I'm pretty much screwed.

Comes down to upgrading my computer or doing the PS2 thing.....just gonna have to see which one costs less...
