Your Toons and You

Due to the nature of TOR with regards to its class story lines I have a sneeking suspicion
that I could end up with a number of alts to experience each of the Storylines.

My main is definitely going to be a Bounty Hunter (powertech) unless in the first ten levels
I am convinced Mercenary would suit my playstyle more.

Regarding alts I suspect it will be (in no particular order)
Imperial Agent (sniper)
Sith Warrior (Juggernaut)
Sith Inquisitor (Assasin)

Also have any of your been considering your toons back story?

:D

I think I'll just be playing 1 character for quite a while unless I decide the class isn't for me. I'll make some alts later on just to get some more variety, different stories and to have some more characters available for clan grouping but probably not initially. Other than NC which were mostly to benefit the clan (2 PPU's on each account so both Rah & I could log one if necessary, construction etc) I've never been one for having a ton of alts. Much much rather focus my time on one and deal with the rest some months later.

I've got 2 classes in mind but I'm not 100% sure which I'll pick just yet.
Imperial Agent (Sniper) was my first choice but then I've strongly been considering the Sith Inquisitor since. Maybe the assassin but since I haven't played a healer since MS in NC a healing sorcerer is very tempting actually. Will have to see how I feel come December :D

I'll just be playing one character to start with, at least for a while. I intend to treat the game like an RPG, and that means I'll be inclined to finish one story off before I start another! That said, if I enjoy the game I'm sure I'll start alts at some point - at which point, they'd definately be other classes to enable me to experience other stories.

With regards to backstory, I haven't come up with mine yet for two main reasons:

1) I haven't yet decided my class.
2) I have deliberately been avoiding details of how each class 'starts off', so that I can be surprised come launch.

What those factors mean is that obviously it'd be pretty pointless for me to plot out a complex backstory just yet :) I certainly will be doing so when I've created my character, and thus when I know what situation it needs to support. That may not be till launch though.

Have you got a detailed backstory ready and waiting?

Not necessarily a complete backstory, but I wanted to have an idea of what his motivations were before the launch,
as I didn't want to just flip flop through the quests going with responses just to please companions... thats what the gift system is for.. :p

As I'm going with the Bounty Hunter the initial dialogue/ quest chain has appeared in plenty of videos/ trailers originally shown
to demonstrate TORs Voice Over and storyline emphasis, this allowed me to come up with a brief outline of backstory
indicating motivation of money, making contacts, killing Jedi and finally Retribution.

I'm not one for alts either, so will probably focus on one character.

But I will most likely created several in the beginning, to get the feel for each class before I decide which I want to play.

At first I was thinking about Imperial Agent (Sniper), but am drifting more and more to Bounty Hunter (Mercenary). Guess I'll see what I end up with once I've gotten a few levels into the different classes.

Perhaps down the line, there should be a sticky thread for alts, or just attach it to the bottom of the Roster thread. I know when I played WoW and NC, keeping track of other people's alts was really annoying. I often had no idea who I was talking to.

As far as backstory goes, does the wider community plan for there to be a lot of RP and "IC" stuff? Is it something the devs are encouraging? I'm interested in hearing more about this, since AFAIK it's very rare for people in other MMOs to think about such things.

With regards to RP and "IC" stuff, Bioware are going to have some specific RP servers,
although RP behaviour will not be enforced.

From a personal stand point my idea of creating a outline Backstory was to give me some motivation indicators
for each of my toons/ alts so I didn't play the story game the same each time.

I wanted to see if by using these motivations I could avoid the situation where you only picked answers/ responses
that resulted in Uber loot (story/ quest chains). This wouldn't apply to PvP situations (realistically) but I was interested
in seeing how far I could go with the PvE content without just falling back into my own personal morals.

For instance

For the Jedi Knight on Tython, one of the decision quests is where you have to stop/ help a pair of Padawans in Love.
If you don't stop them (dark side option) you are rewarded with a Lightsaber crystal, if you do stop (Light Side)
then, I believe, you get nothing but XP.
So which way would you go if playing a goody two shoes Jedi?
Tempted by the loot or stick to your characters motivation?

I know in previous MMOs you sometimes have no RP at all, I think that the RP servers may actually do well for TOR,
due to the fanatical fan base and story orientation.

Will start off by adding peoples character names into the roster thread at launch and see how we go with that. Ideally it would be nice to list peoples classes, specialisation and professions too as well as any alts they use but trying to format that nicely in a thread may not be as easy to read or update as we get bigger. If the need is there though it could be a new page we add on to our TOR group site in the future but we'll how things go ^^ :)

Funnily enough we were just talking about that possibility earlier :)

I'm going to wait and see for now. I've got a few other admin projects on my plate atm - if I get some free time, I may look at it though. But pre-launch, it's not my first priority. The forum thread should be able to tide us over for a little while :)

Whilst I'm aware I'm sort of necroing this, I thought it better to do so than create a new thread on the same topic since it's only been a couple of months ;)

Has anyone yet had any joy with putting together a backstory for their character now that the game has been out for a few weeks? I ask because I find myself in somewhat of a strange situation over mine.

I've produced maybe three copies of a short (maybe a page long) backstory for my character now, but am frequently finding that when I finish it and begin rounding it off, things happen in my class story that make me need to go back and rewrite parts of it - most recently, revelations have come to light about my character's lineage.

I'm reaching the point now where I don't really want to continually have to rewrite it, so I'm considering just leaving this idea alone until I finish my class story and then going back and instead writing a "History of Lordanubis" piece to encompass both backstory and ingame-story.

I'm curious to see whether any others who were thinking of writing a backstory have come up against similar issues. Possibly just me going deeper than I should, but I thought I would ask :)

I have been able to stick with my original, as it wasn't specific enough where the storyline would interfere.

So the basic response and attitudes have been consistent, although this has resulted in my BH being Light side,
whilst my Sith Warrior has so far remained Neutral.

Aha. I get the sense that I have probably been digging too deep then, which is irritating.

I probably should have thought more about what the story could knock apart before I started writing things :)
