He must have been a Commander
You may remember from the founder's pack page but each of the 3 founder levels receive permanent personal exp buffs ranging from 5% to 15%, however the Lieutenant & Commander ranks also give a 5 and 10% exp buff to all squad members as well. I'm guessing the guy you joined up with was a commander and you were receiving that buff from him whilst you were in the squad. I don't think you'll have that buff forever though, only if you were a founder yourself
I think you'll be safe to buy a founder's pack next payday if you decide to get one but don't quote me on that. Not sure if they've decided on a set date to remove them from sale but I purchased mine back in Sep so they've been available for a while. Quite a bit longer than I expected them to be if I'm honest but I suppose that's a good thing even if the bike n stuff are common as muck atm. Allows more people to help support the game and all which can only be a good thing.
