Despite my doubts in IRC I decided to just bite the bullet and preorder the DVD.

Which as it turns out, is clearly the superior version. Despite having to wait, it seems people who ordered on Origin can't access the game. It was supposed to go live on Origin at 12:00 EST, but as of 2:00, people are reporting that it's "not yet available." Maxis has reported that Origin people are looking into the issue, but the main theory seems to be that the unlock time was set for 12:00 PST, as EA is on the West Coast.

Even assuming that the game unlocks at 3:00 EST, I'm sure everyone will have a fun time trying to download the game all at once. Maybe most of the first 10,000 will have the game installed by Tuesday afternoon, and then of course we have the equally cataclysmic rush on the game servers just as people who preordered hard copies are coming home. Should be an interesting launch indeed. ;)

Tbh I'm quite glad that it doesn't release over here until the end of the week now, as much as I want to play it. I wasn't at first I will admit, a little envious of all these people playing lol. I generally hate that we have to wait until friday for our releases (most of the time) instead of tuesday like the US too. That being said, hopefully the server stability, queues and any of these issues will be nice and smooth by the time we get it on friday. I expect these first 24-48hrs will be rocky even though they'll have been using the data from the betas to try and prepare for it. EA servers usually have a fit every Battlefield release for the first day or so from my experience so I would expect the same from this heh :)

I know a few of the streamers had used a Singapore vpn to trick the game into unlocking early, before the US release today. They don't seem to have had any problems or repercussions from doing that but I'm not sure this is something I'd want to do myself. It's not like I have a ton of games linked to my Origin account or anything but seems a bit risky all the same. I've waited 10 years for a new SimCity, couple more days won't kill me :D

Bought myself the Prima Guide yesterday whilst it was on special offer too. First guide I've bought in around 12 years if I'm not mistaken heh.
Haven't had a chance to read any of it yet other than a quick flick through but I liked these:

More diagrams from the guide here too. (Just to note I did not upload these images myself but were posted here.)

My plan of action:
City specializing in culture with my main focus being on the Expo Center, shopping and eventually the Pro Stadium where I can host rock concerts to bring in tourists. For these I will build the Department of Tourism at the City Hall.

I intend to start off with clean wind farms either until they start taking up too much space or until they're not efficient enough to keep my city powered 24/7, then upgrade to solar power. Want to keep pollution to a minimum and go as clean as possible. - The fixed solar arrays take up a lot of land though so it would be ideal if I can use the concentrated solar array instead when this time comes. These look like a satellite dish, are much more efficient and take up far less space than the fixed solar arrays which are basically solar panels which you keep extending). To unlock the concentrated ones you need a University in the region with a school of science and then to finally complete the research project to unlock these. - I'm not sure how far up I'll go in education yet but if another nearby city in the region has these then it should unlock for me.
Since I'll be going green and focusing on bringing tourists to my stadium I have no plans for digging oil etc, therefore I will probably look for a city plot which has a high amount of water and build a pumping station for that instead. Any excess can be provided to the region. I'll be building a department of Utilities to unlock this - To note: The City Hall modules like this are region wide so once I place it everyone else will gain the benefits of it too. There's no need to build another. Same for all the other departments.
Will be attempting to build a robust road network and transportation system to support the massive amounts of tourists the concerts will bring in to my city so I will be looking for a city plot which also has options for road and water access to make use of the trains and ferries. Will be building a department of transportation in my city so these will unlock the passenger train station, municipal airport, regional buses and ferries for the region too.
Should have a large commercial area within walking distance of my stadium to provide both shopping and hotels for my tourists. Possibly go for large police coverage too as criminals are attracted to commercial areas and not just casinos.

So in short:
- Culture with the focus on hosting rock concerts at my Pro Stadium. (Building the department of tourism).
- A city plot which has a high amount of water, decent wind and has both a waterfront and rail access. (Building the department of utilities and water pumping station).
- Mass transit system with passenger train, bus terminal, ferry terminal and municipal airport to support the amount of tourists I hope to bring in to my city. (Building the department of transportation).
- Large commercial area for shopping (and hotels).
- Starting off with wind farms but will upgrade to solar power later on.
- Possibly large police coverage due to my shopping district. (Building the department of safety if I do and this hasn't already been built).

Few other random thoughts:
- Depending what I do with education in my city, we could do with a department of education in the region to unlock high schools etc.
- A University to provide higher level education. This may be good coupled with a city specializing in electronics as your industry won't upgrade without the skilled workers. Though other specializations will probably benefit from a University too, Electronics was the main one I looked into.
- School of Science at the University and complete the research project to unlock the concentrated solar arrays so we don't have to rely on dirty power.
- If someone goes high-tech, consider taking on recycling too. The recycling center will unlock for the region once I've purchased the department of utilities and these will recover the materials you need for producing the processors. Also, if the University is in this city too it will increase the efficiency of your recycling too.
- A Nuclear power plant would be best placed in the city with the University to to avoid potential meltdowns from unskilled workers so University > High-tech industry > Recycling > Nuclear Power Plant could be a good mix for a city.
- Will need a department of safety. If someone is going to need increased police coverage in their city (casino business or lots of commercial) or improved fire service (large industry), they could consider building this module for us. If I go ahead with my police stuff I can always build this though if nobody else has already.

My copy was dispatched today with an expected delivery of "on or before the 11th" so I'll keep my fingers crossed that I can join you guys on Friday too. If not it'll be either Sat or Mon. Ava will have his copy for release day though as he ordered from Amazon :)
^ Those are my plans above at least but if I don't get my copy for friday and someone else in the region has already built some of those department modules I planned on I can always help out by building some of the others for us instead, since they're all supposed to be region wide :thumb:

downloaded sim city today... i'm ready as soon as they unlock it... I'm going for an education oriented city with dirty industry at first. My goal is to have the university and hi tech industry

I'm hoping to unload my waste some place else

I'm looking at creating a city that will thrive on Tech/Electronics and be located on a rail/shipping plot to ensure my goods travel all across the region. As for particular buildings/specs, I can't say as I don't really know what all is out there.

Ok, created the SSX Backyard on the Europe West 1 server. It is the Viridian Woods region and is a private region so invites will be required to join. It looks like you must be online for me to invite you while in-game but I'll see if I can send invites outside of the game to those that are playing.

Here's to our new cities! :thumb:

Cheers for setting a region up for us Mech, I'll give you a shout when my copy arrives so you can invite me in!
Hope everything gets sorted and smoothed out shortly so you guys don't run into too many problems, can't wait to join ya. How you guys have a ball in the meantime ;)

I have been studying the different city stats for Viridian Woods now that I know what kind of city I'm going for. Since I'm going down the culture route with my stadium it would probably be wasteful for me to take up a plot with high amounts of coal, ore or oil when I'm only really after water and rail/waterway links for my tourists. Cities with lots of the other resources would be best left for someone who wants to specialize in those areas I think, rather than potentially going to waste.

Tudor Isle has:
Image
Rail & Waterway Access / 0 Coal, 0 Ore, 2 Oil, 3 Water, 1 Wind
(All cities in the region have 1 wind power btw)

This plot would be ideal for me I think so as long as someone hasn't already claimed this city before I get ingame I think Tudor Isle would be my first preference. I think the Pro Stadium would look pretty awesome situated on the central island in the middle of my city too hehe.
Otherwise: Bamberg Basin (2 Coal, 1 Ore, 2 Oil, 3 Water), Lancaster Pointe (O Coal, 1 Ore, 3 Oil, 3 Water) or Straussburg Isles (0 Coal, 0 Ore, 3 Oil, 3 Water) all offer 3 water and the rail & waterway access I'm after, they just have more of the other resources which I don't currently plan to make use of in my first city :)

I wants to play already xD

People still having issues? I'm reading that there's been a huge community backlash over the mess.

Just ridiculous that companies keep insisting on "always online" stipulations. Causes nothing but grief to everyone but those who pirate :(

Once I establish myself in the region and free my people, we intend to hold you all to ransom. Either you all pay vast amounts of aid money or I let some uneducated sims run a nuclear power plant! The Choice is yours!

My copy was waiting for me when I came home this evening, but at this point I'm holding off on opening it. Patch 1.2 removed Cheetah Speed from the game, as well as the global market price screen, and less important things like leaderboards and achievements. This says to me that the problem is a lot bigger than just a small issue of server capacity. People still had 45 minute queues at 7am EST/4am PST, on a weekday. I'm not the only one out there thinking there's a bigger problem with how the servers are optimized to handle the game. It could be several weeks before we can even play without worrying about data wipes.

Received my copy today which I wasn't expecting tbh, Ava did too.
Just had an amazing few hours on it!

...Not really. Haven't been able to play either yet.

Btw. I don't know whether any of these will be helpful to you guys but whilst I was reading through the guide I jotted down some random notes which I thought may be good to remember, plus a couple of things I read on twitter. They're not in any particular order or formatted or anything but I'll add the list below just incase any of you find it useful:
City Hall modules are region wide. If one Mayor builds a department of finance in his city for example, everyone else in the region will gain the benefits from that and there is no need to build another.
Once we have a Department of Utilities we can make sewage treatment plants. The alternative is the outflow plant which basically dumps shit straight into the ground, Treatment plant however produces no ground pollution and returns treated water back to the water table.
City Hall and its modules will increase nearby land value and encourage medium & health wealth surrounding it.
Mayor's House will increase medium wealth land value and Mayor's Mansion high wealth.

Medium & High wealth sims are more sensitive to garbage or sewage issues
High wealth sims are more sensitive to crime, pollution, and fire. They also need education to be happy and don't like medium taxes. (See chart for all the other effects on happiness)

Density is increased with happiness and determines the size of the building. Desirability (parks etc) increase the land value and the wealth of the sims.
Build an avenue to the highway as it can always be upgraded later if needed.
Reduce the number of intersections connected to the avenue highway, can cause bottlenecks and backups on the highway.
Place service buildings like Police, Fire etc in the center of the city so they don't have to travel too far in either direction. Only start to extend these when the need arises.
As an added prevention measure against fires, look at your waste disposal menu and make sure all garbage cans are collected each day. Piled up trash can increase the chance of a fire breaking out.
If you have any mines or high density industrial buildings consider investing in a Hazmat Garage built at the large fire station otherwise you risk toxic fires which spread uncontrollably causing sickness and creating air and ground pollution.
When building a Hospital consider devoting an entire block to leave room for all of its modules as it will require quite a bit of room.
When placing wind farms look out for wind speeds and place them with speeds greater than 10mph to get full benefit. Also place as close together as possible (take up a lot of space) and build in spots where it's hard to zone.
If you’re set on solar, hold off until you can build the smaller and more efficient Concentrated Solar Array. But to gain access to this advanced technology, you must first complete the associated research project at a University in the region.
Nuclear Power requires high volumes of water to serve as coolant so build a water pumping station to keep up with this. Also build Community College and University as you risk a meltdown with unskilled workers and you'll have radioactive pollution spreading across the ground and into the water table. You can always turn the power plant off until you have the skilled workers you require.
Water towers can be placed on terrain that would otherwise be unsuitable for zoning or placing other buildings. Good idea to make use of the space.
Rain will replenish the water table, rivers and lakes supply unlimited.
Education level increases the efficiency of recycling and educated sims consume less power, water and are less likely to accidently start a fire or become sick from germs.
Parks not only increase land value but also reduce air and ground pollution. Sims can also visit parks designed for their wealth in order to gain happiness.
Public Libraries give your education a small boost but they also provide another place for sims to gain happiness similar to a park. They also increase the city's attraction rating slightly.
A Community College will promote the appearance of clean tech level 2 buildings within your industry and the University will trigger high-tech industry (tech level 3).
Zone approximately two residential for every commercial and industrial zone—follow this 2:1:1 ratio to establish a stable tax base. This being said, you don't necessarily need to keep a perfect balance except on a regional level as sims will travel to other cities to work and shop. Unless you want to be completely self-sufficient.
Keep Industrial zones away from R&C until you have an educated work force. Once you have the former your industry will begin to upgrade into cleaner, high-tech buildings.
If you want to keep a neighbourhood low density but need to upgrade the surrounding roads to medium in order to support more traffic, use the dezone tool on the area before you upgrade the road. This won't demolish them or anything but freeze them in their current tier and prevent them from upgrading to medium density.
Industrial buildings are more prone to fires, commercial to crime and residential to sickness. Consider planning services around these and their demands.
Keep an eye on your city budget and the recent transactions. If your numbers are not adding up you may have a white collar criminal embezzling money. Build a Police Precinct with a Detective Wing at the first sign otherwise you'll continue to lose money to them.
Take a proper look at the data maps of your city before you start planning your layout. These will help you locate your resources for example and help you determine the best place for your buildings.

Low wealth tourists enter your city by train, bus, car or taxi
Medium wealth are the same but can also arrive on cruise ships
High wealth tourists only arrive by cruise ship or plane
Tourists of low, medium & high wealth will seek out class-appropriate establishments to spend their simoleans so provide a wide mix of shops and attractions for tourists. They will also look for class-appropriate hotels too. If there are no hotels for them (or no vacancies) the tourists will leave your city.
Before building a large tourist attraction like the Expo Center or Pro Stadium make sure you've worked out your transportation system and road network. Also consider zoning commercial areas nearby to encourage the creation of shops and hotels, giving tourists somewhere to shop and stay after attending a gig. The more shops and hotels in the area, the longer tourists are likely to stay.
When building the pro stadium. Build a passenger train station as close as possible so it is within walking distance. Also make sure the stadium has adequare coverage of shuttle buses, municipal buses, and streetcards. Build at least one bus stop and streetcar stop within walking distance too.
Make sure nearby cities have access to regional transit hubs like the bus terminal, passenger train station, ferry terminal and Minicipal Airport to increase concert attendance. Help each other out with simoleans to build these if needed.
Emphasize mass transit and police coverage for tourism.
Sims will only walk 200 meters when attempting to transfer from one mass transit system to another, so place stops right next to your passenger train station, ferry terminal or minicipal airport.
Keep buses on avenues and off smaller streets. Place bus stops on both sides of the road (so they're paired) to limit how many U-turns they have to make.

"Rent too high"?. Need cheaper housing for lower income sims.
Be careful when placing parks around low wealth neighbourhoods. Anything other than basic parks will raise land value, causing low wealth buildings to be replaced by medium or high wealth buildings. Possibly leaving your low wealth sims with nowhere to go.

Mentioned this earlier to MS in IRC, but I'll reiterate here for everyone else.

If you guys want a forum, or a place to upload screenshots of our region at some point, just shout. Quite clear there's enough of us playing, and very interested in the game :)

I'd quite like a forum, if only for strategy. This is a multiplayer game, and this is certainly a better forum for communication than the "Region Wall," which mixes chat with game data. It'd be good to coordinate so that our region can be built on true interdependence. I'd also personally love to strategize about city management, as I think we've all noticed by now that the things that are tripping us up are not simple problems, but things that take a bit of analyzing. The simulation is so multi-threaded that it's often difficult to make out why something is happening. I know the last few days I've been a bit frustrated with the volatile ups and downs in my economy and population, but I've discovered that obsessive micro is the key to stability.

Case in point: Last night I noticed that my electrical grid was teetering on the brink of collapse, despite having a substantial surplus to sell only a few minutes prior. My main oil-fueled plant had dropped to 50% capacity because it had quit receiving oil shipments, and was about to run out. I then realized that the gridlock I was experiencing was far worse than usual. The oil delivery truck was stuck at the back of unprecedented highway traffic, as people who were trying to take the off-ramp into my city were backed up all the way to BD's city.

Image

So what caused this swarm? Well, it was all because of a park. I placed a single park in a high density middle class neighborhood, and many of my biggest apartment complexes began renovating into upper class buildings. This temporary loss of workers brought in a tidal wave of commuters. Where I had once had only a few dozen middle class commuters, I now had over 2,000 flooding into my city. So there you have it. My power grid failure was all because I decided to place that damned fountain park!

I was thinking the same. I had quite a nice town going, I was profitable at 1000$ / hour. Then I decided to go to bed and leave the city running.

Bad idea, when I came back, fire, crime etc had forced my sprawling city almost bankrupt. I had to take out bonds in order to bridge the time needed to rebuild the city, build adequate police coverage and expansion etc etc.

Then I begged MS for some cash, which I got, but I thought it came from my recycle center, so I burned it thinking i would get more money with the next tick... which I of course didn't get :D

I'm having some serious germ problems because my industry air pollution moves to my city center. I also think that all my avenues (I don't have roads) are taxing my infrastructure bill.

I placed two recycle centers and a waste disposal center, they are fully upgraded, in this sense that each recycle center has a production line of each recyclable and 12 garages (8 pickup truck and 4 delivery truck garages) and the waste disposal has 16 trucks available.

Yet they can't seem to work trough the workload for some unknown reason. Only 400 garbage units out of 1400 gets picked up and only 50% of my recyclables are being picked up. My recycle center is not producing anything most of the time, forcing me to close the production lines :( :smack:

So any help is really apreciated :thumb:

My city was going up and down all yesterday too, you really have to keep a close eye on everything. Seems you learnt that first hand Sl33py heh. I best not go afk and leave my city running haha.
When I logged off last night I was in the red as far as the budget panel goes and couldn't figure out why one minute I could be in profit (like 1-6k) and the next I'd be in red. I'd shut off some services to try help, bulldozed a couple of areas to rebuild them up to make the most of their spacing and density but didn't seem to be doing much good. Thankfully I was still bringing in lots of profit from my recycling (and theatre events to a smaller degree), but those don't show up on the panel ofc. I also had an embezzler come in to my city (and no Detective Wing), so that didn't help lol.
Recycling was my main source of income though they weren't as efficient as they could have been, failing to pick all of it up. There is currently a bug where your recycling center will suddenly come to a halt with its processing too - your recyclable bar will be remain full and refuse to process any plastic/alloy/metal and stay like that. Screwing everything up. If this happens to you try shutting it down a couple of times and then reopening it to see if that gets it moving again (didn't work for me), failing that rebuild it. It has stopped working for me twice now but each time I've rebuilt it it has started pumping stuff out again. - Incredibly annoying and expensive too if you don't have the funds to do that but worked for me. Also try not volunteering your recycle trucks to nearby cities, read a couple of posts who think this may be one of the causes but I'll be trying that out myself later today and will see if it happens again. <- btw Sl33py. I sent you a bit more cash after you logged last night too so you should get that when you login. Give us a shout if you need a bit more to help with your recycling or bonds or whatever, stockpiled some more cash before I went to bed.

I don't really get how tourism works yet either tbh, probably because populations are always shifting I guess. I started off with the Pro Stadium initially and that was bringing me in a nice profit (nowhere near the max it is capable of, but good enough) but after a while my profit margin started trickling down and at some points I was even losing money from hosting the events there. - Have since downgraded to the Expo Center coupled which the Globe Theatre which atm is doing well, though again not to its full potential. (Some of my other attractions were up and down with their tourists too.)

As for a forum I'd say to just keep this thread going for the time being. Not that I'm against setting one up for us but just to judge how many of us playing are actually going to be posting and likely using it first :)
If you want to setup a screenshot place for us that'd be good though, Anny. Ta for the offer mate. I'll take some jpg pics of the region and other peoples cities at some point and add those in, be nice if everyone else shares some too.
As for my personal screenshots I will probably keep those to my minus account (in my sig) simply because I prefer to take & upload them in all their glory, full lossless png 1080p goodness. Best not start filling the gallery with those methinks

Also I just made a news post on the front page too, you may want to switch the image I used in it over to the SSX server Anny? :). I'm pretty sure those of us who bought SimCity are already playing it and in the region already, at least everyone who said they have. If any of you have been secretly playing though and want to join us just shout, or if you want to give the game a try and play with some of us here. The more the merrier and we can always setup other regions and have several on the go as they become full.

I've made a new region for us now that we have a few abandoned/broken plots.

Ok, screenshot group created and now available to you. I also moved your image to our server as you requested MS, and edited the news post to reflect that :)

I'll wait to decide one way or the other on a forum until more people say what they'd prefer. Easy enough to do, but it should be a group decision!

hmm my new city is absolutely <censored> and I don't know what to do about it.
I put down what I thought were decently planned roads (high density streetcar avenues running down the middle and breaking off left and right from the highway entrance) and I have both buses and streetcars on the go too. Yet traffic is screwing my entire city up. I don't have that many fire trucks atm (can't afford them any more), but the ones I do have struggle to get anywhere due to the insane congestion so almost every time I have a fire it burns several others down at the same time. Forcing me to keep rebuilding them.
My main income was recycling into processors and then exporting but my recycle trucks and deliveries are so bloody slow because of it, my coal plant kept running out of power too because deliveries weren't making it there on time... Just started pulling oil up too just to help me out a bit, but I was leaving that until later :/
I even cut off some of the high density roads connecting to the central avenue to see if that helped somewhat but hasn't done much good.....

So frustrating. Annoying too because before the traffic became such a problem I was making a steady profit which I could rely on. It could be because I've gone low wealth (bit of mid) high density, I dunno.
If anyone has any ideas (go visit my city on the new server and take a look) they'd be much appreciated. Really don't know how to move forward with it now, this may be the first city I'm to abandon :shake: :smack:

What struck me is that it's totally impossible to create a "insert zoning type" only city. You just can't get them profitable. Hopefully my city will develop further as it currently has. I have a rather stable income thanks to iron and coal mining operations. I'm hoping to be able to get the smelter upgrade soon, so I can make a lot more profit.
