Animated avatars aren't allowed right? Is that a rule we brought over from the SSC forums with us or did we discuss it somewhere like we did with the sig pics and i've just forgotten about it? :)

Just thought i'd ask cos i have one i wouldn't mind using if we "were" allowed. It doesn't have any crazy distracting flashing effects or anything if that makes any difference. :p

No harm in asking right? ;)

I'd treat them the same as sig pics myself...but thats just me.

That's very cool, but it does fall into the same category as sig pics, more so maybe, since it moves.

At 111kb no forum in it's right mind would ever let you use it as an avatar.

I could have probably got it a lot smaller than that by reducing the quality but since i didn't even know if i would be allowed to use it i didn't see much point in doing so.
Like i said, no harm in me asking. :)

Very cool MS :thumb:

There are some hilarious animated avatars I would like to use from time to time...
Sig pics take up space (sometimes ALOT of space) and reason I am not big on them.
Animated avatars on the other hand, I personally like and they don't make small threads into HUGE pages when used in succession (Sig pics + sig used over and over = HUGE amount of space per page).

Biggest concern about animated avatars would then be on load times (slow connections) and do we have space for em. Also of course figuring out what is a reasonable amount of kb should each one be.

As far as it being a distraction, this whole forum is a distraction:
from work, from studying, etc.
Whats one more?
Specially when its frickn kewl.

But thats just me.

I don't personally see animated avatars alongside of sig pics tbh, sig pics can take up a lot of space, make a thread even longer to read because you have to scroll past the extra images as well, also making the page take longer to load. Although i personally don't see any harm in them, i can understand why people wouldn't want them..

Animated avatars however are just avatars, but animated. They don't take up any extra space on the page like sig images do, they would still be exactly the same size (85x85) as regular non animated avatars would be. (and as noted, the avatar i posted above i could have reduced in filesize as well if i had wanted cos yes it was too big). The only real difference would be that they moved.

(Pretty much what Pad has already said hehe)

One other thing.
Sure an animated avatar can be distracting to some people, but so can some non animated avatars. ;)

Just a few thoughts on the subject from my point of view anyway, take them as you wish. :)
Thx for the comments on the avatar too btw. :thumb:

I always considered the forums to be more of a comic strip than a cartoon myself.

I also find it incredibe that you feel the need to censor posts instead of responding and reasoning with any point raised.

I refer you to my previous post. I'm sure you know what I said since you probably moved it somewhere. Enough with the fascist bullshit already.

Before this gets stupid, can I advocate PMs and removing both threads please?

Personally I don't think anyone wants, nor needs to see anything of this nature.

edit : taking gryph's and my own advice for part of this post, using PM.

What I will say though, is that "everyone else is doing it, so why don't we" is not a valid reason for us to use animated avatars/banners/resourceblackholes/eyesores/whatever. If anyone doesn't like it, fine. Let us know why. In a Reasonable, and Calmly made out post. Citing reasons for, and possible workarounds are extremely appreciated.

Resorting to namecalling and flaming.. well... I agree wholeheartedly with the mods when they do their job. If they didn't do it, I'd do it for them. And probably with more enthusiasm. I'm intolerant when it comes to people being blatantly stupid.

Exactly and I truly believe this is all that needs to be said on the subject. I understand people are upset for simply doing there job and being called 'explicitly' improper names for it, but there is no need for this production. Lets handle this with our own advise and PM, Chat or IRC this out.... If he doesn't get the point his loss. Lets move on.

Going to lock the rest of the unecessary aftermath.
