Guild Wars or Guild Wars: Factions? I heard Factions was stand-alone and since I like PvP I was thinking of getting that first, if I ever actually decide to get the game. (Been interested on and off since beta.) Can you level new characters in Factions, or is it just for people who already have the first chapter?

you can level new chars on factions without having the first game.
Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big old storm right in the eye and says, "Give me your best shot. I can take it."

Well from what ive read each chapter has its own continent so they stand alone but you can only access the ones you have. Does this mean however if you get GWF you still get the proffessions and skills found in GW or is there a difference (besides assasin and ritualist)?
