So, as the LOTRO folks know, as well as the IRC goons, I have taken up fencing as a way to lose my beer gut and not die of "assoncouch" syndrome.
I am enjoying it so far, I get to stab people twice a week, which has its moments.
I have even set up a corner of our basement as a drill area:

Fun stuff, anyone else doing it?

That's pretty cool. Good luck with the lessons!
I've got a Tai Chi sword in the corner collecting dust. Mind if I took a swing while you take a stab?

I started a burglar in LOTRO, but I guess that doesn't count. Haha!

Methinks thats why he keeps them. He's using them to punish a certain 14 year old asian girl who may or may not have beaten him at some pointSyro wrote:Those sticks look like they could poke yer eye out! Ouchie.

Yes, indeed. The second week of class they had us do 3 touch (point) bouts (fights) in full regalia. I faced off against "Whitney" who not only beat me 3-1 (and my point was a gift from the ref) but also drew blood (my left hand, which is supposed to be behind me, must have been flailing around like a trout on IRC).
And I was wheezing like a 90 year old with lung cancer at the end of it.
We'll just call that incentive for me to do better
I did manage to win our rematch last week, though.

hey, if you haven't already seen it, there's a surprisingly good fencing movie from the early 90s called "by the sword" (good enough that i bought it after i'd seen it)...definitely worth a rental...

I can totally relate to this. I've taken up running again, and by running I mean huffing and puffing for 2 miles at about a 12 minute mile pace. Sadly over the weekend I think above referenced 90 year old was the dude that lapped me 3 times >.<.And I was wheezing like a 90 year old with lung cancer at the end of it.
On the bright side, I'm supposed to run a 10k with Janyxus next spring, and there's no way I'm getting shown up by him -> stellar motivation !
So where are the pictures of you guys in the white outfits?

Those are coming, we keep forgetting to break out the camera, and by the end of each class we are hot, sweaty, sore, tired and hungry
This week, hopefully.

Like that is the first time I have heard that joke since I started
All of the girls are very fit. Our instructor is 41, and she looks 26. It has given both me and the wife further incentive to stick with it a little longer

Five or six years ago I was a really hard core martial artist. I need to find another school to study at, else I too will die of assatcomputer syndrome.

that's a cool vid! you look like you've been doing it longer than a couple of weeks. is that you and your wife? does she know you've been scoring more points on her because she's using one of the studio's practice foils, and you've been sneaking in a numenorian mithril rapier? are you nervous that if you beat her too badly you'll wake up in the middle of the night with a point to your neck?

I believe he said on our other FF forums that the girl in the video is the 14 year old not Mrs. Inquisitor .

Great photos! One of these days I'll get a photo of Kendo practice and slap it up here. Seems the appropriate place.
I totally get the feeling like an out of shape old man, though mostly I feel like a pelican in a desert flopping around trying to fly again. The 16 year old girl in the class is the best one of we beginners so far too. What is it with little girls and swords?

Avoid them, mon amis. They are a dangerous breed.
